Scottish-Nordic similarity perceived by nationalists
Scottish nationalists argue that Scotland shares more in common with Nordic countries than with the rest of the United Kingdom. A YouGov poll found that between 52% and 61% of prospective SNP voters say Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden are somewhat similar to Scotland, while only 31% of that group say England is similar. Those views are often cited to support calls for closer social and political alignment with Scandinavian models.
Cat bite leads to new bacterial infection
A 48-year-old man in the UK was bitten by a stray cat and developed a serious soft tissue infection. Doctors and microbiologists investigated the wound and identified a previously undescribed species of the bacterium Globicatella as the cause. The finding is reported in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, which describes how the organism was isolated and linked to the bite after routine laboratory testing and genetic analyses.
Brazil Amazon deforestation drops 60 percent
Brazil reported a major fall in Amazon deforestation in July: official figures say tree-clearing and burning dropped about 60 percent compared with the same month last year. The government and the environment minister attribute the decline to political changes and new administration policies, based on national monitoring systems. Scientists caution this reflects a single month and that short-term figures can be influenced by seasonal and reporting factors.
India launching Sun-bound spacecraft.
India’s space agency ISRO plans to launch Aditya-L1, a satellite designed to observe the Sun, on 2 September. The spacecraft will travel to the Sun–Earth Lagrange Point 1, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, where it can keep the Sun continuously in view. The mission follows India’s successful Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing and represents a major step in the country’s expanding space programme, aimed at improving understanding of solar activity.
