Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna, widely regarded as the world’s oldest zoological garden, has announced the birth of three endangered megabats. The newborns—large flying foxes—were filmed clinging to and cuddling with their mother and beginning to explore a newly opened rainforest-style enclosure. Zoo staff released video of the youngsters playing and climbing while keepers monitor their health and development as part of routine postnatal care.

A 40-year-old British doctor touring South Africa was shot and killed in Cape Town after turning into Ntlangano Crescent during violent street protests, authorities said. India’s space agency ISRO plans to launch Aditya-L1, a satellite designed to observe the Sun, on 2 September. The spacecraft will travel to the Sun–Earth Lagrange Point 1, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, where it can keep the Sun continuously in view. The mission follows India’s successful Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing and represents a major step in the country’s expanding space programme, aimed at improving understanding of solar activity.

China's Chang'e-4 lander touched down on the Moon's far side in January 2019. Using instruments including ground-penetrating radar, the mission collected subsurface profiles near its landing site. A team writing in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets reports the top roughly 130 feet (about 40 metres) of the surface is layered—alternating dust, soil and broken rock—and that a buried impact crater lies within those layers.
